Introduction
Isaiah says of John the Baptist in chapter forty verse three " The voice of one cryeth, Prepare ye in the wilderness the way of Jehovah: make level in the desert a highway for our God." Just as our messiah needed a way prepared for him then, so today, the way is prepared for our lovely Lord to enter all the deep recesses of our soul.
Is. 40:4 "Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the uneven shall be made level and the rough places plain." This verse shows that in our soul structure there are two possible obstructions that would hinder our Messiah- now in our reborn spirit- from moving freely into our soul structure. The "Low" areas of depression, discouragement, etc. which must be balanced out. The "High" areas of pride, self-sufficiency, etc. which must be brought low. Each of the principles deal with both of these needs. The one supreme purpose of this article is that God may be glorified. "…the glory of Jehovah shall be revealed and all flesh shall see together; for the mouth of Jehovah hath spoken it.
Even though this study is a look at the soul, still it would be incomplete without an understanding of the tremendous place that our spirit has in connection with it. God has made us one being, but in three parts: Spirit, Soul and body. The sinner’s soul is empty-though filled with much trash- until it is linked to the new-born spirit. Then, through the process of sanctification the flow of life is released from our reborn spirit into the forty-eight areas of our soul.
The spirit and the soul are two distinct words; Spirit (OT ruach, NT pneuma) has the connotation of a strong blast of wind. Soul (OT-nephesh, NT-psuche) has one of a gentle breath.
Psychology is a study of the psuche (soul). Man’s wisdom lacks the ability to penetrate into the realm that God has reserved for himself –the spirit. Therefore it, along with the unexplored depths of the soul, is called the "subconscious mind" of which man knows very little.
The term "Spirit" is used in two ways in reference to man’s makeup. It is the personal spirit as presently discussed. It is term used for the attitude of the soul. When one has a good attitude we say he has a good spirit. Of course, we use it in a negative way, too, as a bad spirit.
The beatitudes deal with this last point. When our soul has a good spirit (attitude) then, as a believer this makes the preparation for the personal reborn spirit to possess and control our soul.
Our reborn personal spirit cannot sin and it is perfect. Christ says: "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." (John 3:6) In 1 Jn. 3:9 and 5:18 it says "Whosever is begotten of God doeth no sin, because his seed abideth in him: and ha can not sin, because he is begotten of God." After John tells us "we shall be like him." Physically (1John 3:2), then he says in verse three, in so many words, that we are being made like him. For he says " and everyone that hath this hope set on him purifieth himself, even as he is pure."
However, in 1 John 4:17b we see that we have already been made like him. "Because as he is so are we in this world." By the law of elimination this cannot be either our soul or our body. So this must the part of us which is born of God, that is our spirit.
In understanding the above, we recognize that in 2 Cor. 7:1 it is referring to our mental attitude when it says, "Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleans ourselves from all defilement of flesh an spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Righteousness or (right relationship) is the overriding principle of the Sermon on the Mount. The Sermon on the Mount brings healing to our soul in each of its specific areas. The healings in the Bible show how these right relationships are applied to heal the different areas of our soul.
LOVE IS THE FORCE THAT MOTIVATES ALL THESE PRINCIPLES, Therefore the four love principles of Mark 12:30 intertwined throughout these principles.
Mark 12:30: "And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength."
"With all thy heart" is love in adoration (as God sees it) Mat. 5:23-26
"With all thy soul" is love in affection (as we feel it) Mat 5:43-48
"With all thy Mind" is love in attitude (as those nearest us see it) Mat 6:25-30, 32-33
"With all thy strength" is love in action (as the world sees it) Mat 7:1-12
All Bible references are quoted from the 1901 American Standard Version. This version was chosen because of its literalness to the original languages.

II 7 Soul Drives
The soul drives are the motivating longings of the soul. Here the life of our spirit takes up residence
Key Thought-Balance (Phil. 2:13
Our relationship to God
Our relationship to man
The eyes are (members) of our body. The give vision which stimulates desire. So the healing abilities of each of these principles relate to the basic soul drives are seen in all the blind people healed in the Bible.
A. Self-preservation Drive
Integrity (9) (Matthew 5:13
Matthew 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Salt
a. is a preservative
b. is an antiseptic
Illustrated in healing of blindness in 2 Kings 6:13-23
c. Preservation personally 2 Kings 6. 13-23
(1) From outward enemies (circumstances and people)
(2) From inward enemies (heart attitudes)
d. Preservation corporately 2 Kings 6:13-23
(1) From outward enemies. Seen in Nation of Israel being saved from the Syrian army Acts 20:29 "wolves from without"
(2) From inward enemies (heart attitudes) seen in King’s hate in wanting to kill the Syrians. Acts 20:30 Spiritual lethargy, false brethren
B. Self-expression Drive
Discreet Boldness (10) (Matthew 5:14-16)
Matthew 5:14-16 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Before God: Hebrews 4:16 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Before men: "Let your light shine before men" Healing for timidity " Neither do men light a light and put it under a bushel" 2 Tim. 1:7 (NIV) "For God did not give us the spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline." Boldness with discretion.
Illustrated by the healing of the two blind men at Bethsiada Mat 9:27-31 They came boldly to Jesus "Two blind men followed him, crying out and saying , have mercy on us,"
C. Security Drive (cf Heb. 2:15)
Trust in his finished work (12) (Matthew 5:17-18)
Matthew 5:17-18 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
His finished work for us (Justification)
His finished work through us as we abide in his calling (Rewards) Phil. 1:6
Illustrated by the healing of the demon possessed, dumb and blind man Mat 12:22-23. Jesus’ complete work of healing brought true security because he was in contact with the one who brings all his work to completion.
D. Loyalty Drive
Loyalty (13) (Matthew 5:18-19a)
Matthew 5:18-19 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven:"
Here is one place where God uses the same principle to heal as that which needs healing. giving loyalty "Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments" lack of loyalty to God. Loyalty begins with our loyalty to God.
Receiving loyalty "and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven:"
Demanding others loyalty without giving loyalty to God Acts 20:30. Denominationalism demands loyalty to man’s religious ways rather then submit to God’s order.
Jesus was first loyal to us. "For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled"
Illustrated by healing of the blind man outside of Bethsaida Mark 8:22-26. This pictures loyalty even at a personal cost, seen in his willingness to follow Jesus while still blind, be spit in the eye, and not turn away, and to obey Jesus’ command to not reenter the village. His loyalty was in contrast to the blind men in Mat. 9:31 who disobeyed Jesus’ command.
a. This shows that a person can be healed in one area of his soul and still lack in another. The first stage of the healing pictures salvation, which gives us a priestly vision. The second stage of the healing pictures the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, which gives us the prophetic vision Acts 2:17
E. Control Drive (power)
Judgment (15) Matthew 5:19b-20)
Matthew 5:19-20 but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Christ the judge is our standard (v 17), evaluator (as seen by the commandment) and rewarder (v 19) in contrast to the Pharisses (v 20). Right evaluation determines whether God’s standard or false religion controls us. (Pharisees picture false religion) God’s commands are to bring us under God’s control. Whatever standard we adhere to or are judged by we will teach others.
God’s control over us (by submitting to his commandments) "whosoever shall do them"
God’s control through us (by giving them to others) "and teach them"
Illustrated by healing of the man born blind John 9:1-41 "For judgment came I into this world, that they that see not may see" (v.39)
a. He demonstrated the healing from wrong control over him by receiving the right
Standard, Christ, in contrast to the wrong standard, the Pharisees, "Lord I believe" (vv. 22,35,38)
b. He demonstrates healing of wrong control through him by his teaching the Pharisees
the truth though they refused it and became blind (vv.30-34) Many since have been
healed through these words.
F. Knowledge Drive
Mercy and Truth (18) (Matthew 5:21-24)
Matthew 5:21-24 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: 22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
Our knowledge drive is intertwined with all our other drives, True knowledge is the Word. (Col 2:3) whose main characteristics are grace (including mercy) and truth. (John 1:14,17) Grace and truth are God’s medicine to heal our knowledge drive from error, often caused by anger or deceit. This healing can be in experiential, rational, or revelational knowledge. Anger is a binder that hardens the heart and perverts knowledge. (vv. 21-22) Mercy is seen in the offering of the gift at the altar. (v. 23). Truth is seen in leaving the gift at the altar and being reconciled to our brother. (v.24) There are many Old Testament references referring to mercy (same OT word as Grace) and truth (faithfulness).
There are three distinct healings of blindness around Jericho Luke 18:35-43; Mark 10:46-52, and Matthew 20:29-34. If one studies the three different accounts it can be seen there were three distinct healings, not one as many assume. In a city of 100,000 population it is easy to see there could be many seemingly similar accounts. To reconcile the three accounts into one the inspiration of the scriptures would have to be denied. But one thing they all had in common, mercy and truth were a part of each, for they consistently cried for mercy, and confessed the truth that he was "The son of David"
Experiential Knowledge Mat 5:21-22a. Knowledge through the physical senses
a. Anger is a perverted form of experiential knowledge. "By mercy and Truth iniquity is atoned for" Pro 16:6
b. Illustrated by the healing of the blind man "as he drew nigh unto Jericho" Luke 18:35-43
1. He cried "Jesus, thou son of David" showing he knew the truth.
2. He cried "have mercy on me", showing he needed more than just the truth, he needed mercy.
Rational Knowledge Mat 5:22b. Knowledge through reason and deduction
c. Jesus was exposing the Pharisees perverted knowledge by introducing the way of mercy and truth. Their anger blinded them.
d. Illustrated in healing of blind Bartimaeus "as he went out of Jericho" Mark 10:46-52
Revelation Knowledge Mat 5:22c. Knowledge through the spirit
e. God’s revelation knowledge was coming to the Pharisees through the Son of God Ps 85:8, 10 "I will hear what God the Lord will speak…Mercy and Truth are met together"
1. This is the Mercy-seat psalms, where the Lord communes with his people
Ex 25:22. It was here where the Mercy-seat (mercy) and the Law (truth)
met together
b. Illustrated in the healing of the two blind men "as we departed from Jericho" Mat
20:29-34
G. Acceptance Drive
Love in adoration for God (20) (Matthew 5:23-26)
Matthew 5:23-26 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. 25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. 26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
We can’t adore God in love with something against our brother, else it be a blemished
offering. I Cor. 11:28
a. Love toward God – "leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way" The act of
obedience to go already shows a heart reconciled to God II Cor. 5:18-21
b. Love toward brother – "first be reconciled to your brother" Acceptance was assured
by his attempt of reconciliation, regardless of the other’s response. It remained with
the other brother whether or not his own acceptance drive would be healed through
forgiveness of the offender. (cf Mat 18:23-25)
Illustrated in healing Paul’s eyes Acts 9:3-19, Acts 26:16-16
c. Acceptance before God
He called Jesus Lord "Who art thou Lord?"
He obeyed Jesus "but rise and enter the city…they led him by the hand and
brought him into Damascus. (cf I Tim 1:13-16)
Paul was healed as he obeyed. Without obedience he would not have
been where Ananias found him.
Acceptance before man
Ananias accepted Paul by faith "Ananias departed, and entered the house,
and laying his hands on him said, Brother Saul"
Four aspects of the Acceptance Drive
d. acceptance through what we do: (appreciation) Feeling needed. Paul felt needed by
God. Acts 26:16-18
b. acceptance for what we have: (achievement) Feeling respected. Paul was given
hope of achievements he would do. Acts 26:18
acceptance of who we are: (acknowledgment) Feeling noticed. Paul felt noticed in
that Jesus appeared to him Acts 9:3 (cf Acts 26:16)
acceptance from those we are with: (affection) Feeling loved. Paul felt loved by
Ananias (Ananias accepted Paul by faith) Acts 9:17
III. 4 Inner Laws
These are the four-fold operation of the word in the soul. The three positive laws are to protect and assure the flow of life from the spirit: counteracting the decaying law of sin
A. Law of Faith Romans 3:27
Authority of Precedent (11) (Matthew 5:17-18)
Matthew 5:17-18 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
1. This is also the authority to initiate a new thing in God, a precedent which will be a standard to
be followed thereafter.- faith is an initiator. Moves outward against obstacles to expand the
church. Peter, using the keys of the kingdom, initiated twelve new precedents Christ wanted
the Church to follow, including the Gospel being brought to the Gentiles. Today God still
speakes to people to initiate his scriptural patterns to expand the church. (e.g. Mat 28:19-20)
Romans 3:27-31 The Law of Faith
2. This law of faith is like the stonewall that protects the vine. Every principle of truth that
becomes part of us is a living stone of this wall faith ("The word made flesh" John 1:14)
3. Illustrated in Leviticus chapter eleven Clean/Unclean animals (food) Acts 15:22
In the new covenant, we can eat all things by faith Romans 14:14, 22 I Tim 4:4-5. Peter was
told that What God has cleaned, call thou not common. Acts 11:9, Col 2:16-17 While
initially we were justified by faith, cleansing our heart, (Acts 15:9) now we are to continue
in the faith, keeping us clean from the daily defilement of the world Col 2:6.
a. In Noah Ark all animals were included today all specimens of humanity who walkup that gang plank of faith are included in Christ, Cleansed by his blood.
b. To be clean an animal had to have two traits the chewing of the cud, picturing meditation on the truth and separated hoofs, the sanctified walk in the Spirit. Now.
B. Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus Romans 8:2
Authority of Provision (14) (Matthew 5:19b-20)
Matthew 5:19-20 but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
This is the authority of legal rights. (to overcome the Law of Sin and Death through God’s
Promises.) Psalms 23:5
This authority moves forward from Calvary where all provision were paid until now for the
perpetuation of the church.
This Law of the Spirit of Life is the good vine Gal. 5:22-23
Illustrated in Leviticus 12: Purification after childbirth
Through this cleansing she is "cleansed from the fountain of her blood." This pictures the complete healing from the past blood line of Adam, which now enables to have the new man within us. The functioning of the new man is called The Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus.
a. "Keep thy heart, for out of it are the issues of life" Prov. 4:23
b. "Out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders" Mat 15:19
c. The heart is that which motivates one. At salvation we believe from our heart. The
cleansing that followed the birth pictures the heart healing that enables the clean flow
to come from our spirit and flow into the deep recesses of our soul. Just as then, the
babe came enrolled in Israel, so now the new birth bring a new life into the family of
God.
C. The Law of Sin an Death Romans 7:23; 8:2
Authority of Perfection (16) (Matthew 5:21-24)
(This authority comes from maturity and perfection)
1.This authority comes from spiritual maturity. It is contingent of the transformation through the
renewing of the mind. Our natural soul, just like a natural wild field is transformed in to a
beautiful garden. This authority moves downward from our spirit likes bombs dropped on hell to
liberate our soul
2. The law of sin is lke a bad vine. Gal 5:19-21 Illustrated in Leviticus 13-14 Cleansing of
leprosy. This pictures our healing from sin. Sin made us unclean. Just as the leper received first
the blood and then the oil upon his right ear, right thumb, and right big toe, the same ceremony
as Aaron and the priest received, so our cleansing from sin give us an equal standing to that of
Christ in our justification.
D. Law of the Mind Romans 7:23, 25
Authority of Position (19) (Matthew 5:25-26)
Matthew 5:25-26 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. 26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
This is the official authority of position delegated from the top down. Christ the head dwells in our spirit, hence this authority operates from our spirit.
This Authority points upwards where Christ, the chief apostle, prophet, etc. has delegated (shared) his five-fold ministry life into faithful men, who along with the help of local elders oversee the church Eph 4:8-11. Ephesians 4:8 is quoted in Psalms 68:18 This shows that the purpose of these ministry gifts is to bring the church into his presence (throne)
The Law of the mind is like a vine trellis over which a good vine (law of the spirit) or a bad vine (law of sin) becomes integrated with the seven parts of the Law of the Mind.
The seven parts of the Law of the Mind: Abraham and Lot as examples. Abraham is an example of the positive application of the Law of the Law of the Mind. And Lot is an example of the negative application of the Law of the mind in his life and ministry:
a. Attention
1. Lot Gen. 13:5-9
a. His attention was drawn to something negative, dispute with Abraham
b. Lot had a root of pride, Prov. 13:10 "By pride comes only contention"
2. Abraham Gen. 13:9 Abraham’s attention was on his Lord
b. Attraction
1. Lot Gen. 13:10
a. "He lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan… As the
garden of the Lord. Lot was attracted more to the creation then to
the creator.
2. Abraham Gen. 13:14
c. Initial Choice or point of decision
1. Lot Gen. 13:11
a. He made a choice an act of his will. "So lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan
2. Abraham Gen. 13:18
d. Action
1. Lot Gen. 13:11
a. It became a lifestyle for Lot. "Lot journeyed eastward"
2. Abraham Gen. 13:18
e. Possession
1. Lot Gen. 13:12
a. Lot separated himself and left his uncle to live in selfish pleasure
"Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom."
2. Abraham Gen. 13:18
f. Knowledge
1. Gen. 14:12
a. Lot became a captive "and they took Lot, who dwelt in Sodom,
and his goods and departed"
b. This was part of God’s mercy to awaken him and to lead him out.
Romans 2:4 " the goodness of God leads you to repentance."
c. Lot did not respond, but returned to Sodom Gen. 14:16 "and he
also brought his brother Lot, and his goods."
g. Set Direction
1. Lot Gen. 19:1
a. Lot became an elder of Sodom and was very involved in the
affairs of that city. "And two angels came to Sodom at evening,
and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom"
2. Abraham Gen. 15:
5. Illustrate in Leviticus 15 Cleansing of discharges
a. This pictures the cleansing of uncontrolled mental patterns that defile us in our personal life
b. "Wherefore girding the loins of your mind" I Peter 1:13
IV. The three Faculties of the Soul
Matthew 5:27-30
These determine the manner of expression of the life of our spirit
A. Emotions
Chastity (21) (Matthew 5:27-28
Matthew 5:27-28 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
1. Worship is the proper occupation of our emotions
2. Adultery is the perversion of the emotions "lust of the flesh corrupts our emotions" Gal. 5:24. Lust attacks the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus Gal. 5:16-17 as seen in eves temptations Gen. 3:6 "when the woman saw that the tree was good for food" appealed to the physical appetite. The lust of the flesh
3. Illustrated in I Tim. 2:15 "but she shall saved through her child-bearing, if they continue in faith and love and sanctification with sobriety. Gen. 3:15 "I will greatly multiply thy pain in thy conception; in sorrow (pain) thou shalt bring forth children.
B. Mind
Liberty from Possessiveness (22) (Matthew 5:29)
Matthew 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
The word is the proper occupation for our mind. Psalms 19:8 "the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes." A wrong focus is perversion of the mind. Lust of the eye corrupts Jude 11 and attacks the Law of the Mind. Ephesians 1:18 "eyes of your heart" Greek word "dianoia" meaning deep thought, shows that eyes are associated with the faculty of the mind. This association is seen in Eve’s temptation. Gen. 3:6 "when the woman saw… that it was a delight to the eyes". The lust of the eyes
Illustrated in healing of our mind from vanity or emptiness of creation after the fall. Science shows us that a large part of the mind is not used. This happened after the fall of man. Romans 8:19-23 "For the creation was subjected to vanity" v.20
C. Will
Humility (23) (Matthew 5:30)
Matthew 5:30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
Walking in the Spirit is the proper occupation for our will.
Oppressive authority is the perverse exercise of our will. The right hand speakes of authority, but it can be a desire for the evil use of authority. Mat. 5:30
Boastful pride of life corrupts our will James 4:6-7; I Peter 5:5-6 Pride attacks the Law of Faith John 5:44 "How can you believe when you receive honor from one another. (Proverbs 29:18) "Where there is no vision the people are unrestrained." As can be seen in Eve’s temptation Gen. 3:6 "When the woman saw… that the tree was desired to make one wise" (The Pride of Life)
Illustrated in the restoration to us of the mind of Christ. I Cor. 2:16b The will needs to work to find expression, thus the hand, which works in contrast to the eye, which is only passive in seeing, expresses the will of man. In Gen. 3:17b-19 God cursed the ground, thus smiting the work of man’s hand, Just as in Mat 5:30 where God gave a principle designed to smite the work of man’s hand if evil.
V. Five senses of the Soul
Matthew 5:43-48
These are the abilities of our soul to receive and communicate the flow of life from our spirit
A. Imagination
Restraint of God’s Government (17) (Matthew 5:21-22)
Matthew 5:21-22 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: 22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Verses 21 & 22 present a very clear image of murder and its consequences. Thus it
deals with image-ination
Imagination explores new areas for the flow of life to enter. Imagination needs
government to keep it from going wild (Committing murder). And in verse 22 there
are three levels of government mentioned.
Illustrated in plague in I Cor 10;9 / Numbers 21:5f. The image of the brass serpent on
a pole.
B. Conscience
Guiltlessness (24) (Matthew 5:31-32)
Matthew 5:31-32 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
The conscience is the soul’s antenna which picks up the voice of the spirit. Thus it can discern between soulish and spiritual elements so as to keep the flow of life pure.
Illustrated in the plague in I Cor. 10:7 / Ex. 32:6, 19
Memory
Genuineness (25) (Matthew 5:33-37)
Matthew 5:33-37 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: 34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
Memory is the hidden reservoir that draws on this flow of life it in it’s bottles for
later use. Commitment brings forth genuineness.
2. Illustrated in the plague in I Cor. 10:6 / Num. 11:4, 34 (cf. psalms 106:14)
Reason
Guilessness (26) (Matthew 5:38-39)
Matthew 5:38-39Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Reason coordinates to help the other senses in directing this flow of life in the right
Direction.
2. Illustrated in the plague in I Cor. 10:10 / Num. 16:3, 32, 41
E. Affection
Love in Affection (27) (Matthew 5:43-48)
Matthew 5:43-48 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? 48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Affection, when set upon Christ, draws us to his flow of life to receive it and to flow it to others. (Col. 3:2 KJV)
Illustrated in the plague in I Cor. 10:8 / Num. 25:1ff, 9 for fornication with the Moabite girls.
VI. The three Life Dimensions
These life dimensions are different realms of the operations of the flow of life of our spirit within us Matthew 5:43 – 6:34
A. Nature
Son ship through Regeneration (28) (Matthew 5:43-48)
Matthew 5:43-48Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
Nature is that inherent life within us with which we are reborn. Nature can be
Metamorphosed by the over flow of life from our reborn spirit. Nature can be defiled
by sin’s leprosy (The Adamic nature or flesh)
Illustrated in circumcision. Circumcision is the main tap root of all the healing
Principles. There is much spiritual significance of in circumstances.
Circumcision, in the natural, is a preventive hygienic measure to protect one from
potential venereal diseases, (There are far less cases of Aids among the Jewish as an
ethnic group according to a scientific survey in a resent news article). This shows
how the circumcision of our hearts which is the putting off of the body of the flesh
(Col 2:11), prevents the many spiritual diseases which come from too much of the
old nature. Circumcision was necessary in order to be able to receive an inheritance.
Lev. 12:3, Lev. 12:44, 48. God had always intended for circumcision to be a thing of
the heart Jeremiah 4:4. "Breakup your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.
Circumcise yourselves to Jehovah, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye
men of Judah." (cf. Romans 2:29). "Circumcise with a circumcision not made with
hands, in the putting off of the body of the flesh." (Col. 2:11).
This spiritual baptism (circumcision) experienced at the new birth is a legal judicial
one, retroactive to Calvary where our old man was legally crucified once and for all.
Romans 6:6; I Cor. 12:13
But now God wants us to have it experientially so that we can enjoy our
Inheritance. "Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that you should obey
the lust thereof" Romans 6:12
Gal. 3:29 "And if you are Christ’s, then are ye Abaham’s seed, heirs according to the
promise."
The five affects of spiritual circumcision as seen In Romans 6:1-11 and the five Old
Testament instances of circumcision
a. Spiritual circumcision brings us into a corporate relationship with God. Romans 6:2-3 "We who died to sin, how shall we any longer live therein?" Abraham and his whole household as a group entering into the covenant of circumcision with God picture this. Gen.17:26.
b. Spiritual circumcision causes us to experience more of our inheritance. Romans 6:4 "Walk in newness of life." Isaac pictures this: "God has made me to laugh." Isaac in the Old Testament is a type of the nine fruits of the spirit. Gen 21:4-7
c. Spiritual circumcision results in breaking the control of self and establishing Christ’s headship. Romans 6:6-7 "that the body of sin might be done away…for he that hath died is justified (released) from sin. This is pictured by Moses and Zipporah Ex. 4:25-26. In resisting the circumcision of her son Zipporah was resisting Moses’ headship in the family. But through circumcision the negative control was broken, thus establishing proper headship in the home of Moses.
d. Spiritual circumcision helps us to abound in our new life, giving dominion over sin and death, that we not serve them. Romans 6:8-9 "we shall live with him…. death has no more dominion over him." This is pictured by the Nation of Israel being circumcised Joshua 5:2-9. This was the first time in forty years that the males had been circumcised. They entered into Jordan (Picturing death) and came out (in resurrection) to Gilgal (rolled away) in Canaan (the inheritance). Gilgal received it’s name because the reproach of Egypt, slavery, was rolled away by circumcision. Gilgal also pictures Calvary. Through Christ’s death, where our old man legally died (2 Cor. 5:21; Col. 2:11) our slavery/reproach also was rolled away. For at the new birth the Spirit baptized us into Christ’s death and resurrection. We need not be like certain slaves who, after Lincoln’s emancipation act, remained slaves through ignorance.
e. Spiritual circumcision cleanses our vessel that Christ might live through us. Romans 6:10-11 "but alive unto God in Christ Jesus. Spiritual circumcision was fulfilled by Jesus Luke 2:21 "His name shall be called Jesus." This speakes of the manifestation of the new creature. As we walk in this new liberty, the new creation Christ is manifested to all. "The disciples were first called Christians" Acts 11:26 (little Christs)
B. Character
Character is the structure of principles built into our soul and summarized in love, hope and faith
Lordship of Jesus Christ (29) (Matthew 6:1)
Matthew 6:1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
Illustrated by Isaac being raised from the dead. Gen. 22:10-14 and Heb. 11:17-19 "in a figure. This pictured lordship by the total submission to the Lord’s will.
Giving (30) (Matthew 6:2-4)
Matthew 6:2-4 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

4. Bearing the reproach of Christ (32) (Matthew 6:7-8)
Matthew 6:7-8 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
This is illustrated by the man in Elisha’s grave being raised from the dead. II Kings 13:21
5. Waiting until God’s time (33) (Matthew 6:7-10)
Matthew 6:7-10 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

6. Overflow of the Holy Spirit (34) (Matthew 6:9-13)
Matthew 6:9-13 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
This is illustrated by the ruler’s daughter being raised from the dead. Matthew 9:23
7. The importance of speaking in tongues (35) (Matthew 6:9-10)

This is illustrated by Jairus’ daughter being raised from the dead. Mark 5:22
Witnessing with power (36) (Mathew 6:9-18)
Matthew 6:9-18 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Amen. 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

9, Faithfulness to and appreciation by the Shepard for the Sheep (37) (Matthew
6:14-21)
Matthew 6:14-21 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
This is illustrated by Dorcus being raised from the dead. Acts 9:36-44
10. Assurance of Grace (38) (Matthew 6:22-23)
Matthew 6:22-23 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
This is illustrated by Paul being raised form the dead. Acts 14:20; II Cor. 12:1-4
11. Invincible Faith (39) (Matthew 6:24)
Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
This is illustrated by Eutychus being raised from the dead. Acts 20:9
12. Appreciation of the sheep for the Shepard (40) (Matthew 6:25-34)
Matthew 6:25-34 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
This is illustrated by the Two witnesses being raised from the dead Rev. 11:11 (Moses
and Elijah)
C. Influence (our personality expressed)
Love in Attitude (41) (Matthew 6:25-26, 30-32)
Matthew 6:25-26 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Matthew 6:30-32 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
Influence is our personality expressing life to those around us. Illustrated in the
healing of the withered hand. The withered hand of King Jeroboam I Kings 13:6
(Zech 11:17) King Jeroboam was out of God’s will to begin with because it was a
lack of love in attitude which brought Jeroboam to power in the first place. I Kings
12:1-19. Though pride he tried to extend his influence to include the priestly sphere.
Matthew 12:9 Jesus heals the withered hand.
VII. The four basic Temperaments
These are the basic underlying mentalities or dispositions, which color the impressions and actions of the flow of life of our spirit
A. Outgoing (People Oriented "Looks around" Present time oriented )
Love in Action (42) (Matthew 7:1-12
Matthew 7:1-12 Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye. 6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. 7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? 12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
The word "therefore" in verse twelve shows that this verse sums up the preceding verses. The
key thought for the bold and outgoing and verses one through eleven is Expression or
expressive. Jesus as an example pictured in the Book of Matthew. In Matthew Jesus is seen
as being bold as a lion, The Lion of the Tribe of Judah.
We are to love the Lord with all our strength Mat. 22:37.
When we do this we express the Glory of his name (what he does) Luke 4:14.
Expresses the breadth of God’s nature. (Outreach) Eph. 3:18
This illustrated in the casting of demons Luke 4:31-36 and every subsequent casting out of evil spirits is a follow up showing God’s love in action and how when followed it brings a healing to the outgoing Temperament. I John 3:8 says "for this cause was the son of God manifested" (Bold outgoing) "that he might destroy the works of the devil."
Satan looks for a means of expression. So he can possesses people that he might express
himself through them. The casting out of spirits is the proper expression of God’s love for the
outgoing temperament.
The temptation of one with this temperament is to draw attention to himself. But God’s
intentions for the outgoing temperament is for the outgoing temperament to use their bold
expression to further God’s kingdom by setting people free.
This principle is two-fold, bringing healing not only to the one showing God’s love, but also
to the one who had the demon.
Whereas love in action heals the outgoing temperament, the opposite is true, hate in action
perverts it. This is why God has chosen this kind of divine medicine to counteract it.
B. Goal-Oriented Temperament (Looks ahead – Near future Oriented)
Perseverance to a goal (43) (Matthew 7:13-14a)
Matthew 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life,
Key word (motivation) staying motivated "enter ye in by the narrow gate"
Seen in Jesus as the goal oriented servant (ox) in the Book of Mark
We are to love the Lord with all our heart Matthew 22:37
This expresses the Glory of his Word, Acts 20:32 What we have through his word by fulfillment of promise or prophecy. This expresses the length of God’s nature (commitment to a Goal) Eph. 3:18
Illustrated in the healing of Simon’s wife’s mother of a fever. She as a housewife was hindered from fulfilling her goal of serving her guests until Jesus healed her from her fever.
The second picture is of Christ himself. He could have been tempted to be deterred from his goal just stated in Luke 4:18. He was naturally a friend of Peter’s mother-in-law. By healing her he overcame the obstacle and continued on his way to the goal.
Immediately afterwards, in verse 42b, the people wanted him to stay and not leave them. But he swerved not from his goal. "But he said unto them, I must preach the good tidings of the Kingdom of God to the other cities also: for therefore was I sent." He did not turn to the left or to the right to follow good or bad things. He stayed the course.
Satisfaction of Attainment (44) (Matthew 7:14b)
Matthew 7:14 "and few there be that find it."
Proverbs 13:12 "Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree
of life." (Hope is desire crying out for fulfillment)
Illustrated In double healing of women with issues of blood. First in Mat 9:20-22 The second
in Mark 5:25-34 and Luke 8:43-48.
The women pressed toward Jesus. And having reached their goal, they had the satisfaction of
feeling God’s power surge through them. They were healed of the pain of their goal-oriented
temperament. They received a double healing. Outwardly they were healed, and inwardly
they were refreshed
Introspective Temperament (Inner – person oriented "Looks within" Past oriented)
Penetrative perception (45) (Matthew 7:15-19)
Matthew 7:15-19 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Key word is sensitivity (Sensing one’s own inner state or that of another)
Seen in Jesus in the book of Luke as the introspective son of man.
We are to love the Lord with all our soul Mat 22:37 This expresses the glory of his life (who he is in us.) John 12:23-26
This expresses the depth of God’s Nature (Quality) Eph. 3:18
Illustrated in the healing of dropsy Luke 14:1 Dropsy is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the tissues of the body, usually do to a failing heart or kidney. There is a bloating of the face and possibly other limbs. There is difficulty in breathing because of fluid pressing against the diaphragm.
